The Nonnewaug gymnastics team thought its season was over after just missing qualifying for Saturday’s CIAC Class S meet.

But then one of the teams entered into the field pulled out because of a rash of injuries and Nonnewaug head coach Mark Sorrentino got a call.

“We were the first alternate to the field and the meet organizers asked if we would like to compete because one team had dropped out. I said sure.”

So the Chiefs, who finished runners-up at Class S in 2010 but endured an up and down 2011 campaign because of injuries and inexperience, packed their duffle bags, hopped a bus and headed to New Milford High School for Saturday’s Class S meet.

Low and behold, the Woodbury school finished third out of six teams at the event, a result that surprised and delighted Sorrentino. The Chiefs totaled 118.025 points, well behind winner Valley Regional (132.450) but less than four points behind second place Foran.

“The girls were thrilled,” said Mark Sorrentino. “We weren’t even supposed to be here, so I told them to just have fun and compete as hard as they could and we wind up with third place. The girls are already talking about next season. What a great way to finish the year.”

Grace Cvanciger had a splendid meet for the Chiefs. Her 9.1000 in the vault was easily the top score in the event, while her 8.700 in the beam was third best in that event. She also had the fourth best score (8.450) in the floor exercise.

Madyson LoPresti was solid for Nonnewaug, with her 8.925 score in the vault trialing only Cvanciger, and she totaled at least 8.200 in all three other events. Stephanie Rinaldi’s 8.700 in the vault was fourth best in that event. Keira Sullivan also competed for the Chiefs.
