STORRS: The journey to their 10th National Championship gets underway this weekend at the place where betting is the norm.

Betting against this team might not be the smartest take but a few make take the long odds that face any Division I women’s basketball program that hopes to knock of this year’s version of the University of Connecticut Huskies.

Quarterfinal action gets underway on Saturday for the Huskies at the Mohegan Sun Arena where they will take on either Cincinnati or UCF, teams that they beat by an average of 60 points in three meetings during the regular season.

Yes, I said 60.

The American Athletic Conference has not put up very much, if any resistance since the Huskies joined them last year, not managing anything close to an upset (Louisville came closest at 17 points and then left the AAC) in 35 straight defeats.

UConn beat Cincinnati twice (96-31 and 96-36) while disposing of the University of South Florida in their one meeting by a 100-45 final.

The AAC Tournament runs Friday through Monday with UConn scheduled to play on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Forgive me for being too presumptuous in thinking that UConn will be playing in the final in the land of the Sun.

Sunday’s opponent will either be ECU or Tulane, teams the Huskies have beaten by an average of 53 points in four meetings this season.

The Sunday game will be played at 5:30 p.m., the finals on Monday night at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The polls took a shaking up this week as South Carolina dropped from second to fourth after losing for the first time in the SEC in the final game of the regular season to Kentucky.

Notre Dame holds the number two spot, followed by Maryland, the Gamecocks with Tennessee filling out the top five.
