Mills boys tennis clinches share of BL title...
Team Result: Win, 3-2
Team Record: 14-2
The Mills Boys tennis team won their last two matches against the 1st and 2nd place teams in the Berkshire League to clinch a 2nd Berkshire League title. With a win tomorrow against Thomaston, Mills will be the outright Berkshire Champions in the League. I was proud of the tennis I saw on the courts today from both Mills and Housatonic. I will be interested to see the outcome of the Shepaug and Houstaonic match tomorrow, both teams are incredibly competitive and athletic.
#1 Singles: Trevor Robinson (Mills) lost to Ferdinand Gelbrich (Housatonic): 6-0, 6-0
Comments: Trevor gave it his all against an incredible player. Ferdinand had an all around game and is one of the better players I have seen in my 4 years as a coach. I would not be surprised to see Ferdinand make a run in the class S state tournament. Trevor you played great and look at this match as a way to improve your game for states. Hopefully there will be an opportunity for these two athletes to play again in the Berkshire League Tournament.
#2 Singles: Holden Robinson (Mills) defeated Jonathan Miller (Housatonic): 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)
Comments: Holden game out strong and played very well in the first set, while Jonathan took a bit longer to get into his rhythm. In the 2nd set Jonathan went up with a 3-0 lead, but Holden was able to take the lead back at 6-5. The 2nd set ended in a tiebreak battle with both players not backing down and playing hard.
#3 Singles: Bill Bentley (Mills) defeated Zach Busby (Housatonic): 6-0, 6-3
Comments: Bill came out to play today and was in control for the entire match hitting solid ground strokes, serves and winners. Zach is a solid player, but Bill had the advantage from the start.
#1 Doubles: Jake Perfetto and Sinclair Bush (Mills) lost to Eric Chin and Liam Lynch (Housatonic): 6-1, 1-6, 8-10
Comments: Jake and Sinclair looked out of step and sync in the first set, luckily it is a best of 3 match. In the 2nd set Sinclair and Jake seemed to wake up and play to their true potential. I was proud of how the two regrouped, but they could not keep the momentum going in the third set tiebreaker. Let us take this as motivation to win tomorrow and play well in the Berkshire League Tourney.
#2 Doubles: Jeff Molgano and Eric Jameson (Mills) defeated Wayne Purdy and Henry Yuliann (Housatonic): 6-4, 6-2
Comments: This was the match that decided if we won or lost the match. Both Eric and Jeff played well under pressure and were the more aggressive doubles team, which won them the match and clinched our 2nd straight BL title!
This puts us at 14-2 (13-1 on the Berkshire League) with two matches left for the season. Tomorrow we have Thomaston home for the last Berkshire League match of the season and next Tuesday we have non-league match against Suffield for Senior Day. WE had a tough stretch the past week and the boys have stepped up when it mattered most.
Congrats on this win boys, we already clinched the Berkshire League title, if we win tomorrow the title is ours alone. Let's go Mills!
